METRO WEST DAILY NEWS – Looking for a job? The Marlborough Economic Development Corporation may be able to help.
More than 30 Marlborough-based companies, including 11 from the new Apex Center of New England, will partner to help put residents back to work during the sixth annual Marlborough Works! Job Fair next week.
City officials and the MEDC first organized the job fair in June 2012 to connect job seekers with Marlborough companies after hearing from a number of corporations in the city that had jobs available and wanted to hire local residents.
Representatives from more than 30 companies, including GE Healthcare, Raytheon and IPG Photonics, are scheduled to attend the Oct. 26 fair. Eleven businesses from the soon-to-be-opened Apex Center of New England – including Chick-Fil-A, Goldfish Swim School and Hot Table – will meet prospective job seekers, said Meredith Harris, executive director of the MEDC.
Job seekers will have an opportunity to discuss their qualifications and showcase their talents to company officials.
“When applying for a job, sometimes you don’t have the opportunity to speak to the (Human Resources) Department or the hiring manager to make your case,” said Harris.
This year’s job fair will feature more employers who will be looking to fill about twice as many job openings as in previous years.
Due to an influx of corporations expanding or moving to Marlborough, the city’s unemployment rate has decreased by 44 percent since 2012. The city’s rate stands at 3.2 percent, a number Harris hopes will decline with the help of the job fair.
The city also holds a job fair in the spring, which focuses on entry- and-mid-level positions.
The job fair will run from 5:30-8 p.m. at the Courtyard by Marriott on Felton Street. Attendees are encouraged to register online in advance to avoid long lines and to bring a copy of their pre-registration for a chance to win a free Samsung Galaxy tablet.
