Mayor’s Message

Welcome to the website of the Marlborough Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), the state-chartered economic development corporation for the city of Marlborough, Massachusetts. MEDC is a unique and innovative public-private collaboration whose mission is to implement proactive initiatives for business and industrial expansion in the City while fostering commercial growth and revitalization in the City’s downtown and historic neighborhoods.

Having served the City of Marlborough for 18 years, it is my honor and pleasure as Mayor to invite you to explore the options our city offers for business, manufacturing, trade and commerce. We are a pro- business community located at the heart of the state’s growing innovation economy with job and population growth spurred by national firms in hi-tech, defense, financial services, bio-sciences and renewable energy technologies. Successful firms such as Raytheon, Sunovion, Hologic, Boston Scientific, Ken’s Foods and Dow Chemical either call Marlborough home or have had a major presence in the City for many years.

In recent years Marlborough has witnessed a growing cluster of Life Sciences and Biotech companies – Advanced Cell Technology, Spectra Analysis, Navilyst, 21st Century Biochemicals, Qteros, Capaccio Environmental Engineering to name a few – and this is a sector we plan to focus our attention on. Together with a number of vibrant and growing next generation IT Services and Energy companies, all of our commercial and industrial tenants have discovered that with its highly educated and diverse workforce within easy commute of its affordable Class A office and industrial parks, Marlborough is a location ideally suited for business development.

MEDC is proud to host the Marlborough Innovation Summit, an annual event that assembles key city business representatives, City officials, academics and local and regional institutions. This event serves as a platform for us to listen to the needs and requirements of our valued businesses, share current trends and information and provide a unique networking opportunity.

Marlborough is proud to be home to three private companies that were ranked as Top Growth companies by the Worcester Business Journal in 2011. They are Bridge Energy Group, Access Northeast and The Davis Companies. Highly successful businesses that have recently opened offices in Marlborough include global wind turbine manufacturer Vestas, Power Home Remodeling Group (ranked the nation’s #4 home remodeler), Nasdaq Corp, SNC Lavalin (one of the top ten engineering firms in the world) and Coaltek Inc., a clean energy company.

Marlborough hosts four of the Metrowest region’s 26 data centers. One of them, Earthlink runs a 16,000 sq ft facility for customer data use. Marlborough Hospital has been steadily gaining accolades over the years and with the construction of its Cancer Pavilion scheduled to be complete in 2012, the city gains a top notch healthcare facility accredited to the UMass Memorial Health Care system.

Some of Marlborough’s biggest and best known attractions include The New England Sports Center, the six rink ice skating and ice hockey facility that hosts some of the area’s largest tournaments and events; Fore Kicks, the premiere indoor/outdoor soccer and multiple sports complex; Solomon Pond Mall the region’s second largest shopping mall and Special Olympics Massachusetts with its Yawkey Sports Training Center.

Marlborough was voted the ‘Best Place to Raise Kids 2011’, by Bloomberg Businessweek, a wonderful validation of what we as residents have always known!

2011 was a milestone year for MEDC and the City with the completion of the ‘Marlborough Economic Development Master Plan: Building the New Marlborough Economy’. The plan won the American Planning Association Massachusetts Chapter (APA-MA) Planning Project Award 2011. This plan sets the tone for future economic development activities. Key action items include focusing on commercial real estate vacancies, the creation of Urban Village zones in the French Hill and Route 20 areas; and growing the city’s sports tourism initiatives.

With all these features and more to offer it’s easy to see why Marlborough is the place to be. MEDC will work with you to showcase development opportunities in the City. It is your one-stop point of contact to tap into the City’s array of business-friendly services and information resources. With a legislative mandate to promote economic development in the City, MEDC works in close collaboration with the Mayor’s office, the City Council, the Massachusetts Office of Business Development, Mass Development, the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative, and regional metropolitan planning offices. Starting here, you will quickly learn all that Marlborough has to offer residents and businesses in terms of economic opportunity, incentives for growth, history, cultural diversity and recreation.

On behalf of the City Council, our local businesses, City employees and residents, I thank you for your interest in our city and invite you to take the next step towards growing your business right here at the crossroads of the Massachusetts innovation economy.

Sincerely,

Arthur Vigeant
Mayor
