Marlborough, MASS. October 7, 2015 – The City of Marlborough has gained close to 6,000 new jobs since 2012. New commercial move-ins and expansions—mostly from the biotech, high tech and manufacturing industries—have brought more than 5,000 new jobs to the city, with the rest coming from organic growth within the business community.
Unemployment in Marlborough fell by 35% during the same period, from 5.7% in August 2012 to 3.7% in August 2015, according to the latest figures from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development. The current rate is 21% and 27% lower than the Commonwealth and national averages respectively.
Marlborough Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) Executive Director Tim Cummings says the city has been gaining momentum because of its appeal to biotech firms and manufacturers of all sizes.
“Marlborough has an ideal location and Class A commercial buildings, with access to the same talent pool as Boston and Cambridge,” says Cummings. “Clearly this is attractive to companies of all sizes and, for us, one of the end result is more jobs for our residents. Six thousand new jobs in four years in a community of just 40 thousand people is nothing short of amazing.”
The Marlborough Works! initiative, which launched in June 2012, has coincided with the major improvements in the city’s job market. Organized by the MEDC and Employment and Training Resources (ETR) as part of Mayor Arthur Vigeant’s initiative to increase local employment, the annual series of events kicked off last night with a Résumé Development Workshop at the Embassy Suites. This was the first of two complimentary training sessions for Marlborough residents, offered ahead of the main event—the Marlborough Works! Job Fair.
The next session— Networking and Marketing Workshop—will be held on Thursday, October 15th from 6pm to 8pm at the Embassy Suites, and will aim to help attendees understand how to market themselves to prospective employers.
The Marlborough Works! Job Fair will take place on October 27th from 5:30pm to 8pm at the Courtyard by Marriott-Marlborough Ballroom. To date, 25 companies from various industries have signed up to take part in the free event, including GE Healthcare, Quest Diagnostics, SanDisk, Boston Scientific, The TJX Companies and many more.
This year’s job fair will be held in two separate rooms, with larger employers only meeting with jobseekers who have already applied for available positions online. Applicants will be required to show copies of their online applications, in order to gain access to company representatives.
