Marlborough FinCom OKs proposed commuter shuttle to MBTA station

METRO WEST DAILY NEWS – City leaders are calling a proposed shuttle that will take residents to and from the Southborough train station the missing link in the last-mile gap for local commuters.

The shuttle service would carry commuter rail passengers coming from Boston or Worcester to their jobs in Marlborough and city residents to the Southborough train station. “Last mile” is a term for regional bus routes that allow passengers to complete their trip using public transportation rather than driving to and from the train station.

“Transportation has been the missing link,” said City Councilor Donald Landers. “This is definitely one of the best examples of economic development. I think it’s the start of something big.”

Mayor Arthur Vigeant is seeking a $200,000 transfer from the city’s economic development account to pay for the service for a year. The council’s Finance Committee resoundingly signed off on the request this week. The full council will vote on the matter at its next meeting on Aug. 26. The mayor hopes the shuttle will launch in early September.
