Library on the move

Library on the move

MAIN STREET JOURAL – The largely underutilized Walker Building in downtown Marlborough will soon be gaining a tenant but the new occupant will not be there for long. A major renovation and expansion of the Marlborough Library will begin next year and the Walker Building will be used as a temporary home for the library’s contents.

The move is expected to take place sometime in the middle of 2020 with the first floor of the Walker Building housing much of the library’s collection. Children and teen programs will continue pretty much as is but adult offerings will be reduced until the renovations are complete. The tentative timeline for completion is eighteen months minimum, with a likely grand reopening some time in 2022.

The City Council approved a $23.7M bond earlier this year to pay for the renovations. Helping to offset the cost will be a $10.1M grant from the state. The project will increase the facility’s size from 22,300 square feet to just over 38,000 square feet.
