METRO WEST DAILY NEWS – Deg Batista’s Brazilian background is front and center at her new Boston Post Road (Rte. 20) cake shop.
Batista is a native of Minas Gerais, Brazil, and Deg’s Cakes features a menu based on the tropical palate on which its owner grew up, such as coconut, dulce de leche, strawberry and pineapple. On display in showcases are traditional desserts such as chocolate and coconut cakes (bolo prestígio) or intensely chocolatey truffles (brigadeiro).
And Batista said customers have been embracing the sunny flavors since opening day.
“It’s all in the Brazilian style,” said Batista.
She first got her start in 2015, when she took a class to learn how to make a cake for her daughter’s sweet 16th birthday party. After that weekend, she fell in love with baking and hasn’t stopped since.
She went on to take many cake specialty classes in and outside of the country, collecting certificates that include KDCAA (Korean Cake Design Association), advanced gum paste, fondant and modeling chocolate.
“It’s been an amazing experience,” said Batista.
