Marlborough, MASS. October 4, 2016 – Marlborough’s unemployment rate fell to 3.2% in August, marking a 20% decrease from the same time last year and a 44% decrease since August 2012.

According to the latest figures from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development, Marlborough’s unemployment rate for August was 16% and 35% lower than the Commonwealth and national averages respectively, positioning the city among the top 33% of Massachusetts communities with lowest unemployment rates.

Marlborough Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) Executive Director Meredith Harris says that business expansions and new commercial move-ins—like the recent opening of the GE Healthcare Life Sciences headquarters in Marlborough—have contributed greatly to the decline in local unemployment, and the MEDC plans to continue building on this momentum.

“I’m very proud to say that, through the efforts of Mayor Arthur Vigeant and MEDC, Marlborough has created more than 6,000 new jobs and slashed the unemployment rate by nearly half in just four years,” says Harris. “But our work is far from done. Our goal is to not only continue helping businesses create new jobs in the city, but to make every effort to fill those jobs with Marlborough residents. That’s why we are bringing the Marlborough Works! Job Fair and career workshop back for a fifth year.”

The Marlborough Works! initiative, which launched in June 2012, has coincided with the major improvements in the city’s job market. Organized by MEDC as part of Mayor Arthur Vigeant’s efforts to increase local employment, this series of events consists of free career training sessions for Marlborough residents leading up to Marlborough’s largest job fair.

This year, Marlborough Works! kicks off at 6pm on October 19th with a free LinkedIn Workshop at the Embassy Suites.

The main event—the Marlborough Works! Job Fairwill take place on October 27th from 5:30pm to 8pm at the Courtyard by Marriott-Marlborough Ballroom.

To date, about a dozen companies from various industries have signed up to take part in the job fair, including The TJX Companies, Ken’s Foods, DCU, OYO Sports, Prudential Financial and many more.

To view a complete list of participating companies, apply for available positions, and register  for the Marlborough Works! events, go to https://www.marlboroughedc.com/jobfair/.
