Marlborough unemployment falls 50% in four years to 15-year low

Unemployment fell to 2.7% in September, a number not seen since 2001

Marlborough, MASS. October 25, 2016 – Marlborough’s unemployment rate fell to 2.7% in September—the lowest the city has seen since May 2001. The new rate marks a 15% decline from the previous month, a 33% drop from the same time last year and a 50% decrease since September 2012.

According to these latest not seasonally adjusted figures from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development, Marlborough’s unemployment rate for September was 46% lower than the national average, and positioned the city among the top 25% of Massachusetts communities with lowest unemployment rates.

“The sharp decline in Marlborough’s unemployment rate shows that our local economy is strong and the city is well positioned for continued growth and future success,” said Marlborough Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) Executive Director Meredith Harris. “Through the efforts of Mayor Arthur Vigeant and MEDC, Marlborough has created more than 6,000 new jobs and slashed the unemployment rate by half in just four years. Our goal is to continue helping businesses create new jobs in the city and to make every effort to fill those jobs with Marlborough residents.”

The Marlborough Works! initiative, which launched in June 2012, has coincided with the major improvements in the city’s job market. Organized by MEDC as part of Mayor Arthur Vigeant’s efforts to increase local employment, the Marlborough Works! Job Fair will take place on October 27th from 5:30pm to 8pm at the Courtyard by Marriott-Marlborough Ballroom.

To date, close to 30 companies from various industries have signed up to take part in the job fair, including GE Healthcare, Quest Diagnostics, The TJX Companies, Ken’s Foods, DCU, OYO Sports, and many more.

Job fair attendees are encouraged to register online ahead of time and bring a printout of their registration to the event for a chance to win a free laptop.
