Marlborough, MASS. January 7, 2011 – The Marlborough Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) has added eight new members to its board and set an aggressive agenda of projects for 2011.

Top of the list is the creation of an economic development master plan for the City, an initiative spearheaded by Arthur Bergeron, MEDC chairman. To date 60 requests have been received since the RFP was announced December 14, 2010. According to MEDC Executive Director George Ciccone, “The goal of the master plan is to identify the current state of the local economy, develop a community consensus of how we want the local economy to develop, and an action plan that identifies the specific economic development policies, programs, projects and activities that will be necessary to get us there.”

Other MEDC initiatives include Sports/Tourism, Urban Core Projects and Commercial Properties. Sub committees have been set up for each of these areas.

The Sports/Tourism initiative chaired by Richard Tomanek aims to reach out to the ice hockey and skating, soccer, baseball, and Special Olympics facilities and to work with them as well as the hotels and restaurants to increase visitors and tourism to the city.

The Urban Core Projects Initiative chaired by Richard Bennett will tackle the many vacant properties in the city such as the Walker Building, the Armory, and the vacant plot on Main Street which can be revitalized and repurposed.

The Commercial Properties Initiative chaired by Michael Hogan seeks to actively grow business in the City by connecting property owners/landlords and tenants with the City. MEDC’s quest is to have all of Marlborough’s commercial properties at full occupancy resulting in increased profits for property owners and increased tax revenues for the City.
