Marlborough High School seniors can now get EMT, EMD, PST certifications

Marlborough, MASS. March 21, 2019 – Marlborough High School (MHS) has partnered with Patriot Ambulance to become one of the first public high schools in Massachusetts to offer professional Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Training and Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) and Public Safety Telecommunication (PST) training to its students.

The program is designed to provide MHS seniors with the chance to pursue professional certification in the healthcare industry, while they are still in high school. Students can then graduate with credentials that allow them to go straight into the workforce. The current standard for EMT training applicants requires that they are high-school graduates and at least 18 years of age.

MHS guidance counselors will begin recruiting students this spring, and classes will kick off in the fall. The EMT training will consist of 165 hours of coursework and a final exam that is required for basic certification. The program will also incorporate an additional 72 hours of dispatch training and 90 hours of field work.

MHS Principal, Dan Riley, says he hopes the program will be the first of many local partnerships that will give his graduating students a leg up in the workforce.

“The 21st century economy presents us with the opportunity to redesign the way our comprehensive high school prepares young people for post-secondary success,” Riley said. “As the Marlborough community grows with employment opportunities, Marlborough High School will adapt by providing students the opportunity to earn entry-level credentials in thriving industry sectors.”

“Marlborough is a leader in economic development, and our school system is going to take advantage of every opportunity from this incredible growth,” said Marlborough Public Schools Superintendent, Michael Bergeron. “ This experience will be transformative for the students involved, and we are thankful to Patriot Ambulance for being a partner.”

When it comes to preparing its students for success, MHS is already one of the leading high schools in the region. In 2017, ranking site Niche.com named it among the top 100 public high schools in Massachusetts, and, this year, MHS ranked 81st among the best college prep high schools in the state. MHS also offers 22 Advanced Placement courses and runs a nationally-recognized STEM Early College High School program in affiliation with Harvard University Graduate School of Education. Earlier this year, MHS joined the city’s two other high schools to form the first local STEM Council, which will allow students to cross-collaborate and benefit from the variety of resources available at each institution.
