MARLBOROUGH, MASS., June 12, 2012 — At a ribbon-cutting ceremony yesterday, Marlborough Mayor Arthur Vigeant encouraged Marlborough residents to use a newly revitalized pocket park in the downtown area during the summer months. “Please come down and enjoy this new space,” he said.
Mayor Vigeant was accompanied by other city officials and business leaders to officially open the park at 167 Main Street to the public. The lot had been vacant when a 2010 fire destroyed a commercial building once housed there. Through a public-private partnership between the Marlborough Economic Development Corporation and Marlborough Savings Bank, the space has been transformed with new shrubs, trees and picnic benches for ample seating.
“We were devastated by the fire,” said City Council President Patricia Pope, who is a member of the Marlborough Economic Development Corporation’s Board of Directors. “It left such a hole on Main Street that was a reminder every day when we walked by and saw an empty lot.”
Mayor Vigeant noted the Marlborough Economic Development Corporation took initiative to lease the space and brighten up the downtown area. The celebratory event was also attended by Marlborough Chamber of Commerce President Susanne Leeber, who led the ribbon-cutting ceremony; Marlborough Savings Bank representatives; Mary Scott, chairwoman of Marlborough Downtown Village; and others who have helped make the new park possible.
Soon after the ceremony ended, the park was used as part of the annual Taste of Marlborough and Brewfest to offer musical entertainment as attendees made their way to various food stops.
